Babymoon

We took a little extra time to celebrate Valentine's Day this year and went up to a Bed and Breakfast in Napa. It was a nice relaxing place with a great Innkeeper to take care of anything we needed. We had a fireplace, a jacuzzi tub, a balcony looking over the pool and surrounded by giant redwoods. It was a peaceful mini vacation that we both thoroughly enjoyed.

Tuesday we came back from our babymoon and attended baby class 3 of 4. We spent a lot of time focusing on breathing. The instructor had us hold ice in our hands and squeeze as we practiced different techniques to see which ones were the most helpful to us while feeling uncomfortable. Obviously we all understand that ice is no contraction, but it was fun to practice mind over matter and to find out which techniques worked better for us than others.

Only 1 more week until we take our trip home to Nebraska! We are both very excited to see everyone and to spend some time with family.

2nd baby class

Tuesday night checked baby class number 2 off the list. We got a tour of the birth center at the hospital. Apparently it was a busy night for the birth center but the whole floor felt really calm and relaxed. They showed us all the rooms had to offer and explained the process we would go through upon arrival. It all seemed simple enough to figure out, but it was nice to get the tour and have an image in mind of where the birth will be. Those beds, showers, and tubs can do amazing things. I couldn't believe all the positions the bed could contort itself into. It was fun to see how the bottom third of the bed can be lowered down to the ground and the squat bar put in over it. You can raise the back of the bed up to meet your back and inflate the built in lumbar pillow for extra support. It is amazing to think of the options we have now that weren't available even when I was born.

The videos weren't nearly as traumatizing as I expected them to be, but I really didn't need to see that much "stretching" up close and personal. It was nice to see a labor process from beginning to end. Obviously we didn't watch it in real time, but we still saw little bits of each stage along the way. Neither one of us were really scared off, so I guess that's a good sign. We're ready to take it on when the moment arrives less than 3 months from now!

We also practiced more breathing and massaging :) I feel a little bit like Zach is getting cheated in that part of the class, but then I remember that I am carrying about the baby the rest of the hours in the day. So, I don't complain about the massage, and I don't feel too guilty for enjoying every minute of it :)

I had my glucose screening this morning for gestational diabetes. I don't have my results yet, but the fasting before the draw really messed me up. They tell you to eat every 2-3 hours when you are pregnant, but then tell you not to eat anything for hours and hours, and then drink a nasty sugar solution, let it sit in your stomach for an hour, and then they draw your blood. Bluck! I was supposed to work afterwards. I went and got something to eat, then went to work for about 45 mins, but my blood sugar was just thrown off too much and I was gagging and woozy so I came home to rest for the rest of the day. I'm still not really feeling 100%, but I'm sure I'll be back in action tomorrow!

28 weeks...another appt.

Zach and I went to pick-up the crib today, but my car wasn't big enough, so we couldn't bring it home yet. Dr. said everything looks and sounds good. Up next, choosing a peditrician. It is super warm in Alameda right now. Saturday it got up to 82!! Normal for this time of year is 60-65. Zach and I have been enjoying the warmth and taking walks and we went on a picnic yesterday. All is well in our world!

1st Baby Class

Zach and I had our first baby class Tuesday night. I think we were both not really wanting to go when the night came, but we had signed up (paid for it :>), so we needed to go. We hit more traffic than expected on the way, but still arrived in plenty of time. The class was set to begin at 6:30, but at 6:28 there wasn't a single other person, not even a teacher, in the room. We went back to the front desk and made sure we were in the right spot, and after being reassured we were, we went back and waited a little longer. After 10 or so minutes, 8 more couples and the teacher had arrived. There had just been heavier traffic coming in from all directions, so everyone was a little bit late.

The class was a lot of fun, very relaxed, and informative. The chairs had good support for big pregnant ladies and the teacher instructed us to use a second chair out in front of us to put our feet up :) The due dates of the other ladies range from the middle of March til the end of May, so our baby is right in the middle of the group. Each class has a little reunion meeting one month after the last baby is born to see the babies and check in on how everything went. It is crazy to think that reunion really isn't that far away!

We spent time going through picture diagrams of the stages of dilation and discussing how the cervix does it's job when the time comes. We also got to "push" a doll through a fake pelvis to see how the baby will and won't fit when she is turned one way or another. It really is fun to learn all the details and to know what will be happening that I can and can't see while in labor. We spent the last part of class practicing some different sitting positions and deep breathing techniques. Zach was a good hubby through the breathing exercises and offered physical support for me to lean on as well as massaging :) His practice run is going very well so far :) :)

Our classes are located inside the Berkeley hospital where we plan to deliver our baby. Our Dr's office is just 3 blocks away, but this was the first time we actually went inside the hospital itself. Next week we will go on a tour of the birth center and be able to see the whole labor and delivery area. The birth center has a reputation for being pretty fantastic, so I am excited to go up and see it all on Tuesday! Our teacher told us the hospital delivered over 8,000 babies last year. I don't really know the statistics of any hospitals, but 8,000 babies!! That's a lot of babies!!!!
